City of Regensburg

A vital component.

The site of the former abattoir is located in the east of the city, between its historic old town and the Westhafen port. An area of some 6.9 hectares is to be developed here to create an urban district offering a mix of uses. In 2009 the City of Regensburg staged a Europe-wide competitive tendering procedure to select an investor for the site. In 2010 its choice fell upon the concept jointly developed by CA Immo and ASTOC Architects & Planners. The site is seen as a vital component for overall urban regeneration in the east of the city. The inner-city character of the future Marina Quartier is to be highlighted with a mix of residential, service and leisure facilities. The listed building of the former abattoir will play a key role in creating an identity for the site as a whole. The planned development is to give a derelict site a new lease of life. This will make a practical contribution towards sustainable land recycling and turn a run-down area of the town into an attractive new urban district, which will seamlessly connect with the existing mix of land uses in the east of the city centre. With its proximity to the old town the new development of the Marina Quartier will significantly enhance the character of this inner-city location in the east.
